Work underway to correct flooding issues in Cleveland

Work is underway to correct recent flooding issues along Highway 129 south in Cleveland.

City Manager Kevin Harris said that on 129 South, on the tractor supply side, that is where there was a sinkhole that had been there for a while and recently enlarged. He said the Georgia Department of Transportation had committed to work on that issue earlier last week. On the left side of the highway, after flooding on August 15 and again on August 20 and some extensive damage occurred GDOT dug up the damaged pipe last Friday.

Harris said Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry signed an emergency order that allowed GDOT crews to come in and fix things.

“Right now, the plan is to start where the collapse occurred around Chastain Insurance and run with a new pipe south just past Little Caesars Pizza,” commented Harris.

Harris said the city is elated with the partnership with GDOT in getting this work done.  “This will be millions of dollars that the city of Cleveland would have possibly had to be involved with otherwise. GDOT is gonna take care of that for us. And then having said that the next phase will be, they’re gonna possibly look at 129 North,” said Harris.

There is not a timeline for this project because they don’t know what they will run into, and they have to order the replacement pipe.

“If everything goes good, it shouldn’t be that long now that funds have been committed; they just have to complete the work, “ said Harris.
