MURRAY COUNTY, Ga. — A wildfire that burned 61 acres in Murray County on Monday is now 100% contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire, which ignited earlier in the day along Peeples Lake Road inside the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, prompted a multi-agency response.
The U.S. Forest Service led the incident, with Georgia Forestry crews working containment lines on the ground and USFS aircraft conducting water drops. The Murray County Fire Department also supported the operation from the command post.
Officials said there was no immediate threat to nearby structures, but smoke was visible throughout the area.
On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a Fire Danger Statement for all of North and Central Georgia. Forecasters warned that low humidity, wind, and extremely dry vegetation made conditions ripe for rapid fire spread. Outdoor burning was strongly discouraged. Conditions are expected to worsen on Tuesday. The public is encouraged to remain alert and report any smoke or fire they see.
A livestream camera on Fort Mountain captured views of the fire area throughout the day.
