
ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia Police Department is urging students and residents to be vigilant following an armed robbery reported Saturday night near campus.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded around 9:54 p.m. on October 4 to the area of Finley Street and Waddell Street. Two victims told police they were approached around 9:30 p.m. by a man who pointed a handgun at them and demanded their belongings.
The suspect is described as a Black male, approximately 50 years old, with a gray beard. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. Investigators said he fled the scene toward Baxter Street after taking several items from the victims. No injuries were reported.
In response to the incident, the University of Georgia Police Department issued a safety reminder to the campus community. “We urge all individuals, whether in this general area or elsewhere, to be extremely cautious of their surroundings. Everyone should develop specific safety strategies that relate to their circumstances,” UGA Police said in a statement.
