ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia Performing Arts Center is marking its 30th anniversary this year with an extraordinary season featuring nearly 40 artists from around the globe, including world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
“We’re so excited! We’re thrilled to reach this milestone,” said Jeffrey Martin, director of the Performing Arts Center. “We’re also pleased to be able to contribute to the campus and community in the way that we do.”
This season’s lineup includes guest artists from 13 countries, with performances ranging from classical and jazz to dance, theatre, and global roots music. Highlights include Broadway legend Lea Salonga, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, violinist Augustin Hadelich, pianist Angela Hewitt, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and Grammy-winning folk artist Rhiannon Giddens.
The season will also feature major orchestral performances, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, as well as Handel’s Messiah. Other international standouts include Dreamers’ Circus, Lúnasa, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, Jordi Savall, Tenebrae, and Ballets Jazz Montréal’s Dance Me: The Music of Leonard Cohen.
The centerpiece of the celebration will be the return of Yo-Yo Ma for a special gala concert on February 1, performing a solo recital to benefit the Performing Arts Center.
“He’ll be doing a solo recital which will be so special,” Martin said. The concert will mark Yo-Yo Ma’s return to Athens. He performed in the Classic City in 2012.
