Traffic stop leads to major meth bust in Rabun County

RABUN COUNTY, Ga. — A routine traffic stop near GA 15/US 441 and Resort Drive led to a major drug bust earlier this week, according to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office.

On October 3, deputies pulled over a blue Mercury Marquis and identified the occupants as Charles Kevin Vanhorn and Kimberly Sue Elliott. During the stop, investigators found approximately 18 ounces of methamphetamine.

Both Vanhorn and Elliott were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine and other related offenses.

Sheriff Mark Gerrells praised his deputies for their work in the case.

“I want to commend the hard work and dedication of our deputies,” Gerrells said. “Their alertness, professionalism, and commitment to duty continue to make a real difference in keeping our community safe. The actions they take, day and night, reflect their deep care for the people of Rabun County and their determination to confront the problems that threaten our community.”

Gerrells added that the sheriff’s office remains committed to fighting the flow of illegal drugs through both enforcement and education.

“As I have said before, we will not sit back and allow drugs to take hold in Rabun County,” he said. “Our efforts will continue through enforcement, education, and community partnerships to address this issue from every angle.”

To increase transparency, the sheriff’s office announced it will begin releasing monthly reports detailing drug enforcement and criminal activity statistics. Those reports will be made available to the public in the coming days.
