A Toccoa man died late Saturday after a fire broke out at a home on Busha Street.

Stephens County 911 received reports of the fire around 10:49 p.m. on August 2. Emergency crews from the Toccoa Fire Department, Carnes Creek Fire Department, Stephens County EMS, and Toccoa Police responded to the scene.

When the first units arrived, they found flames coming from the front of the residence, officials said. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack on the fire and began searching the home for occupants.

According to Stephens County Chief Deputy Coroner Lee Woody, firefighters located an unresponsive man inside and pulled him from the burning structure. EMS personnel began lifesaving efforts and rushed him to Stephens County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old James O. Sanders of Toccoa. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,” said Woody.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Toccoa Police Department, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
