
From the gridiron to the cross-country trails, local athletes delivered championship-caliber performances this week. Jefferson kept its dynasty alive with a dramatic region title win, Banks County carried the torch on the softball diamond in Columbus, and both Union County and Lumpkin County runners raced their way to postseason glory.
Here’s a look at our Teams of the Week:
Football – Jefferson Dragons
The Dragons fought down to the final horn in their region title clinching victory over Oconee County. Jefferson now has four straight titles, setting a program record in the process.
Softball – Banks County Lady Leopards
The Lady Leopards were the only local team to make it to Columbus. Banks County dropped its first and third game, but grabbed one win to advance in the bracket.
Girls XC – Union County Lady Panthers
Lola Hunter ran to an individual championship while also giving UC the title as well. Macy Payne, Avery Hussion, Kate Barrett, Neva Brott, and Averie Tanner were all pivoal to the success, as was Grace Wright.
Boys XC – Lumpkin County Indians
The Indians were the Region RU, as SO Witt Windham (16:00) was the Region Champ and second at the Sectionals, helping the team secure a state berth.
