A Stephens County woman died Monday morning after her SUV crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85.

The wreck happened around 7:14 a.m. on August 11 on I-85 North, a mile north of the Lavonia exit. According to Georgia State Patrol Post 52, a 2009 Jeep Wrangler driven by 42-year-old Melinda Blair Sorrells was traveling behind a 2025 Kenworth commercial truck when traffic slowed due to weather conditions.

Troopers say the truck, driven by 46-year-old Jose Tamez-Agurre of Mexico, slowed with traffic, and the Jeep struck the rear of its trailer. Sorrells died at the scene from her injuries.

Tamez-Agurre and his passenger, 44-year-old Angel Castillo, also a resident of Mexico, were not hurt. Investigators say impairment is not suspected, and no charges will be filed.

The crash remains under investigation by Trooper First Class M. Vandiver.
