Hardman Farm State Historic Site will host its annual Mountain Farm Celebration on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The popular festival celebrates the history and culture of the Sautee-Nacoochee Valley, attracting over 600 visitors each year.
“This event is a great way to watch history come to life,” said Sarah Summers, assistant manager at Hardman Farm. “Visitors can try hands-on skills once needed for everyday mountain life—like making apple cider in a hand-cranked press, milling corn, or churning butter. It’s like stepping into another era.”
Hands-on history
Guests of all ages will get an immersive glimpse into 19th-century mountain living. Demonstrations will include black-powder firing, moonshining, quilting, and cross-cut sawing. Visitors can also sample cornbread cooked over an open fire or treats baked in the farm’s restored wood-fired kitchen.
This year adds a special twist: a Community Plant Swap. Guests are encouraged to bring non-invasive plants, bulbs, or seeds from their gardens to trade with others. “Our past two plant swaps have been a big hit,” Summers said. “We’re thrilled to combine it with our biggest festival of the year.”
Fun for the family
The celebration isn’t just for history buffs. Children and families can pan for gems, play old-fashioned games like croquet and cornhole, and meet farm animals inside the 150-year-old horse barn. Traditional craft vendors will showcase Appalachian handiwork, while local food vendors serve up lunch and seasonal favorites like funnel cakes, boiled peanuts, and baked goods.
Explore Hardman Farm
Festival admission also includes access to the 1870s-era mansion, the century-old dairy barn, and other historic outbuildings. “We often hear from people who have driven by Hardman Farm but never stopped in,” Summers noted. “This is your chance to explore the mansion and celebrate mountain life.”
