A cold front ushered in Arctic air across North Georgia on Monday, pushing temperatures down into the 20s and low 30s overnight. Light snow began falling across mountain counties in the afternoon on November 10 and continued into the night.
At least an inch of snow fell in the higher elevations, including Towns County, where the sheriff’s office warned of several accidents due to slick roads.
Despite the bitter cold, many embraced the season’s first blast of winter, sharing photos and videos across social media. In Helen, visitors said the town looked like a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie as snowflakes drifted down over streets lit with Christmas lights.
Schools closings; Freeze Warning
The weather forced schools in nearly a dozen counties to cancel or delay classes on Tuesday due to concerns over road conditions. Subfreezing temperatures quickly iced over melted snow, and school transportation officials expressed worries about putting buses and student drivers out on the road.
A Winter Weather Advisory expired at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the mountain counties, but a Freeze Warning is in place for much of north and central Georgia through 10 a.m. Wind gusts up to 25–35 mph are possible in the mountains.
For those traveling on Tuesday, be mindful that the cold and snow could make roads and bridges slick, especially at higher elevations or in shaded spots.
