Police seek help identifying man killed by suspected drunk driver in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. — The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is asking for the public’s help identifying a man who was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver late Saturday night, October 26.

Police say the crash happened around 11:39 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 29 North and Highway 72. A 33-year-old man from Hull was driving a 2017 Nissan Versa north on Highway 29 when he struck a pedestrian crossing the road.

The pedestrian died at the scene. Investigators say his last known location was at a nearby restaurant, but they have not yet been able to identify him.

Officers later arrested the driver and charged him with homicide by vehicle in the first degree and DUI-alcohol.

This was the seventh fatal crash of 2025 in Athens-Clarke County, resulting in eight deaths so far this year, police said.
