Phenix City mom accused of trying to smother infant

A Phenix City mother is accused of trying to smother her 4-month-old infant daughter according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. On November 24, 2025, at approximately 12:38 AM, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a mother attempting to smother her infant.

Lee County Deputies arrived in the 200 block of Lee Road 212 in the Phenix City community of Lee County approximately eight minutes after the call. Deputies contacted several individuals who stated that Mireire Johana Garcia Lucero (28) from Phenix City was trying to suffocate her baby. Witnesses also stated that they observed Lucero choke and shake the baby to get her to stop crying. ETS responded to the scene and transported the infant to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, GA, to be medically assessed by a physician. At the time of transport, the baby was alert and seemed to be in good health.

Lucero was arrested and transported to the Lee County Detention Center, where she was charged with one count of Torture and Willful Abuse of a Child and one count of Attempted Murder. She is being held in the Lee County Jail on an $85,000.00 bond.
