Newspaper publisher passes away

Columbus has lost another icon. Helmut Gertjegerdes, the former managing editor and co-publisher of The Columbus Times Newspaper, passed away earlier this week.

He was also a fashion photographer in New York City, where he met his future wife, Carol. They became a team at the newspaper after it was started by Carol’s mother in 1965. Helmut and Carol were married for 62 years.

“We were determined to make sure African American stories were published and told in a positive light,” said Carol Gertjegderes.

Carol’s mother was also part of history. Dr. Ophelia DeVore Mitchell was known for her pioneering efforts in the fields of beauty, fashion, modeling, and entertainment. Dr. DeVore Mitchell was the first mixed-race/African American high fashion model in New York City in the late 1940s.

After Carol and Helmut took over the publication, they were assisted by their daughter Petra.

“Helmut was born in Germany. He wanted to make sure to show the positive side of anyone, regardless of color or origin,” explained Carol.

Carol, their daughter Petra, and Helmut published The Columbus Times Newspaper.

The memorial service for Helmut Gertjegerdes will be held Sunday, November 2, at 4:30 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 9947 Veterans Parkway in Midland. There will be a visitation with the family from 3:30-4:30 pm.
