Habersham County and the Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720 will host a Purple Heart Day ceremony on Thursday afternoon to honor local veterans who were wounded or killed in combat.

The event, scheduled at 2 p.m. at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Cornelia, will mark the county’s first official observance since being designated a Purple Heart County last month.

Veterans, families, and community members are invited to attend Thursday’s ceremony.

The Purple Heart is the oldest U.S. military decoration, first created by George Washington in 1782 and revived in 1932 to honor those wounded or killed in combat. August 7 is recognized nationwide as Purple Heart Day.
