DEMOREST, Ga. — A Habersham County school bus overturned Friday afternoon after the driver swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle that stopped to turn, authorities said.

The crash happened around 2:42 p.m. on September 26 on Cannon Bridge Road/GA 105 near Twin River Orchard Road. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the bus, driven by 58-year-old Ronald Lewallen of Demorest, was traveling west when it veered off the north shoulder and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest on its right side.

Lewallen told investigators he was waving at three other buses he routinely passes when the vehicle ahead of him suddenly stopped to make a left turn. To avoid a collision, he steered off the road, causing the bus to overturn.

No students were on board at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Now Habersham has reached out to the school transportation department director for more information. The Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
