CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Interim Habersham County Parks & Recreation Director Terry Lannon submitted his resignation last week, but now he’s asking to take it back.
In a letter obtained by Now Habersham, Lannon said his resignation was made “with reluctance” and asked county leaders to allow him to continue serving.
“Given the developments that occurred since this past Friday, I would like to, if possible, withdraw my letter of resignation of the position of the Director of Parks & Recreation for Habersham County,” Lannon wrote.
He continued, “I feel that while we’ve accomplished much in these past six months, there is much work yet to do,” he wrote. “I would be proud to serve my community during this interim period and even beyond that.”
On Tuesday, September 23, the county confirmed that Lannon is still employed as the interim parks and recreation director.
Resignation
County Manager Tim Sims confirmed Friday that Lannon resigned from the post he accepted in March, when he came out of retirement to stabilize the department after former director Brooke Whitmire stepped down. Sims said the resignation was voluntary, although Lannon had recently agreed to stay on past his six-month contract and even applied for the permanent position.
“He told us he had just been thinking things over the last couple of weeks,” Sims said. “Even though he enjoyed working in the park programs again, he decided he didn’t want the stress of being a full-time director and wanted to enjoy his retirement.”
Return
Lannon, who also served as Habersham’s full-time parks and recreation director from 2005 to 2007, received praise for his recent efforts.
“He has done a tremendous job cleaning up things at the Parks Department during his tenure,” Sims said. “We are grateful for his dedication in getting the ship turned in a better direction.”
The county continues its search for a permanent parks and recreation director. As of September 22, the job was still not listed on the county website.
