CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Less than two weeks after the sudden resignations of three senior staff members, the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce has appointed Shane Smith as interim Chamber coordinator.

In a message to members this week, Chamber Board Chairman Tommy Thurmond announced Smith will oversee day-to-day operations and assist members with questions, events, and other chamber business during the transition.

“We are grateful for Shane’s willingness to step in during this transition period while we search for a new Chamber President,” Thurmond wrote. “Thank you for your continued support as we work to select our next Chamber President.”

Smith, who has a background in marketing and communications, previously worked with Partnership Habersham and the Chamber to promote local business growth and economic development. She said she looks forward to “helping grow the Chamber through creative programs, strategic marketing, and engaging community events.”

The Chamber’s announcement detailed Smith’s office hours, noting she will be available in person most weekdays and by phone or email for additional support.

Search for new president underway

The Board of Directors is finalizing the job description for the Chamber President position and plans to post it early next week. Afterward, board members will review applications and begin interviews.

The update follows the October 16 resignation of Chamber President Ellie Van Doornum, along with Marketing and Programs Director Alex Michelle and Administrative Coordinator Anne Minium. The Chamber has not commented on whether the departures are connected or what prompted them.

Thurmond previously said the board has regained access to the Chamber’s membership database and arranged temporary office support to handle phones, emails, and walk-ins.

A period of transition

Despite the leadership turnover, Chamber officials say operations are continuing and upcoming events are being reviewed to ensure plans remain on track.

“The Board of Directors is working diligently to ensure a smooth transition and continued success for our members and community,” Thurmond reiterated.

The Habersham County Chamber of Commerce serves hundreds of local businesses across the county, playing a key role in networking, tourism promotion, and economic development.
