HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a man who died while in custody at the Towns County Jail.
Brian William Whitney, 44, of Hiawassee, was found unresponsive in his jail cell around 3:05 a.m. on Saturday, August 2. According to the GBI, Towns County deputies discovered Whitney and called EMS. He was pronounced dead at the jail shortly after medics arrived.
The Towns County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI’s assistance with the investigation. Preliminary findings indicate there was no foul play involved, authorities say.
An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains active.
