CORNELIA, GA — As the holiday season arrives, bringing with it increased traffic and winter weather conditions, the Cornelia Police Department is urging motorists to prioritize safety. To help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely, Chief Johnathan Roberts has released a list of top driving tips and vehicle maintenance suggestions.

Top 5 holiday traffic safety tips

Law enforcement recommend that drivers adopt a defensive mindset to navigate the holiday rush:

  • Plan buffer time: Congestion is inevitable around major holidays. Leave earlier than necessary to reduce stress and eliminate the urge to speed.
  • Stay defensive: Holiday traffic often brings fatigued or unfamiliar drivers onto the roads. Remain vigilant, scan your mirrors frequently, and watch for unpredictable lane changes.
  • Prioritize visibility: With shorter days and potential winter weather, visibility is key. Use turn signals early and keep headlights on to avoid last-second surprises.
  • Eliminate distractions: Drivers should focus on the road, not the festivities inside the car. Ask passengers to manage music and navigation, and utilize hands-free devices.
  • Watch for impaired drivers: Report unsafe behavior immediately. If you plan to celebrate, designate a sober driver or avoid travel during peak nightlife hours.

Pre-travel vehicle inspection

Before heading out on a long journey, the Cornelia PD suggests performing a “health check” on your vehicle to prevent breakdowns.

  • Safety note: Cold weather can expose mechanical issues that go unnoticed in warmer months.
  • Tires & brakes: Check tread depth and sidewalls for cracks. Ensure tire pressure is adjusted for cold weather and that brakes feel consistent without pulling.
  • Fluids & wipers: Top off engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Switch to winter-rated windshield washer fluid and replace streaking wiper blades for maximum visibility during storms.
  • Battery & lights: Have your battery voltage tested, as cold temps drain weak batteries. Verify that headlights, brake lights, and hazards are fully functional.
  • Emergency kit: Pack a winter survival kit including blankets, a flashlight, a portable jump starter, water, and non-perishable snacks.

Chief Roberts said, “part of making sure that everyone has a safe holiday means good prep work before travel”.

By following these guidelines, the Cornelia Police Department hopes to reduce accidents and help the community enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.
