Columbus loses another icon

John and Carol Woolbright are treasures in Columbus. John will be missed.

John Douglas Woolbright, Sr. was a beloved husband, father, and community business leader who touched the lives of many. Known for his warm smile and soothing radio voice, John had a gift for storytelling and making people laugh. He was a true southern gentleman, always putting others first and finding ways to mediate crises.

A lifelong learner and adventurer, John loved taking side roads to explore small cities and historic sites. He was a talented musician, playing saxophone in The Abstracts for 30 years, and enjoyed ballroom dancing and Argentine tango. John was a devoted husband to Carol, and a proud father and grandfather to his family.

John’s philanthropic spirit and kindness touched many, including his customers at The Williamsburg Shoppe, which he and his wife owned and where he greeted area residents for 35 years.

Former Georgia House of Representative Jed Harris described John as a well-respected citizen and merchant who contributed much to making Columbus a great place to live.

John and his wife Carol loved dancing.

Woolbright supported various causes, including The National Infantry Museum, Dancing Stars of Columbus for Alzheimer’s Association, the Columbus Botanical Gardens, and the restoration of the original Upatoi Methodist Church. John graduated with a BS Degree from Auburn University, loved Auburn football, served in the army during the Vietnam War and earned awards for his service.

John Woolbright was beloved by many.

John’s life was a testament to his faith, and he lived each day with purpose, inspiring those around him to do the same. He will be deeply missed as he was a legend in his own time.

John is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann Woolbright, son John Douglas Woolbright Jr. (Lee), son James Klinger Woolbright (Jennifer), brother David Ernest Woolbright (Catherine), grandson Jack Thomas Woolbright (Lexi), granddaughter Amanda Woolbright Garcia (Zachary), grandson Joshua Sikes Woolbright, grandson John William Woolbright, and granddaughter Madison Leanne Woolbright.
