Blairsville man charged in early morning assault

BLAIRSVILLE, Ga. — A Blairsville man is behind bars after authorities say he severely injured another man during an early morning assault on Wednesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged 56-year-old Charles Bennett with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery following the incident, which occurred around 4 a.m. on November 5 at a home on Pleasant Hill Road in Union County.

When deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from severe injuries. The victim was airlifted to a trauma center, where he remains in critical condition.

Investigators say Bennett was still on the scene when deputies arrived. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into the Union County Detention Center.

The GBI says additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.
