ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police are investigating a shooting that happened Wednesday morning near the Clarke County Courthouse in downtown Athens.

Around 10:40 a.m. on October 8, a Clarke County Sheriff’s Office deputy reported hearing a gunshot and saw people running from the area. Responding officers later found a shell casing near the courthouse.

Through the Real Time Crime Center’s camera partnership with local businesses, investigators tracked a suspect leaving the area. Police say the suspect went to the Athens Transit Multimodal Center and boarded a bus. Detectives identified those involved and followed leads to a location where several individuals were detained.

One of them, 18-year-old Ladainian Rainwater of Athens, was arrested in the 100 block of Sycamore Drive. Rainwater faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes, reckless conduct, battery, and participating in criminal street gang activity.

Police say the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective David Harrison at David.Harrison@accgov.com or 762-400-7361.
