HART COUNTY, Ga. — Hart County deputies arrested two people on drug charges after a routine traffic stop uncovered a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, Sheriff Chris Carroll said.

Deputies stopped a gold 2001 Ford Windstar around 3:14 p.m. on Dec. 26 along Elberton Highway near Hodges Mill Road. Carroll said the deputy immediately recognized the driver as 43-year-old David Donald Diehl of Hartwell and knew he had an outstanding warrant from Banks County. While deputies confirmed the warrant, they searched the vehicle.

During the search, deputies said they found about 22 grams of methamphetamine, along with digital scales, baggies, syringes, and an additional unknown brown substance. Deputies also recovered a driver’s license reported stolen in an unrelated entering-auto case.

Deputies arrested Diehl and charged him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, theft by receiving stolen property, and possession of drug-related objects.

Deputies also arrested the passenger, 38-year-old Michelle Lynn Smith of Danielsville, and charged her with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Both suspects were booked at the Hart County Jail.
