Columbus Tree recycling campaign begins (Hall County Government)

The Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission announces its Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Campaign, encouraging residents to recycle real Christmas trees after the holiday season. This year’s campaign is anchored by a partnership with Columbus Water Works and supported by Columbus Parks and Recreation, Columbus Public Works and other city partners, all sharing a commitment to protecting local waterways and promoting environmental stewardship.

From December 26 through January 12 residents may drop off real Christmas trees at designated locations throughout the city. Recycled trees will be repurposed to support local aquatic environments by creating fish habitats that strengthen ecosystems and improve water quality.

“This annual campaign highlights the power of collaboration,” said Lisa Thomas-Cutts, Executive Director of the Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission. “Our partnership with Columbus Water Works allows us to connect waste reduction with water protection, turning a seasonal item into a meaningful environmental solution that benefits our community long after the holidays.”

Christmas trees are biodegradable and when recycled, can be used to create underwater reefs that provide shelter for fish, promote algae growth, and support the aquatic food chain. Recycling trees also helps conserve valuable landfill space.

“Recycling your Christmas tree is an easy way for residents to make a positive environmental impact,” said Anthony Johnson Christmas Tree Recycling Campaign Co-Chair. “It’s a small step that supports cleaner water and healthier habitats right here in Columbus.”
