HEMC investigating cause of fire that disrupted Trailwave internet service

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Habersham EMC continues to investigate the cause of a fire that knocked out internet service to hundreds of Trailwave fiber customers over the weekend.

The outage began after a fire at one of Trailwave’s main fiber poles in Clarkesville burned through three major connections, severing service to multiple areas. According to HEMC’s Director of Community Relations, Mary Beth Horton, the details are still being investigated.

“The cause of the fire is still under review and that information won’t be known until the review is complete,” Horton told Now Habersham Monday.

Fire severed service

The fire knocked out connections across Clarkesville and nearby communities. Customers woke up to widespread outages before dawn on Nov. 30. The outage impacted at least 500 customers systemwide. Trailwave reported that the fire also impacted its phone system and website and took down the company’s SmartHub Portal temporarily.

Trailwave reported that service was back online Sunday evening after a daylong outage.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the company posted a social media update, stating that service had been fully restored.

“A huge thank-you to our crews who have worked tirelessly all day and through the weather to get everything back online,” the post stated. The company thanked customers for their “patience, support, and kind words” throughout the outage.
