HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. – For Lieutenant Matthew Wurtz of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Operations, the commitment to service is a lifelong mission, one that spans 35 years in law enforcement and began decades earlier in the United States Marine Corps.
Wurtz, a veteran who joined the Marine Corps in 1990 around the time of Operation Desert Shield, credits his military experience for shaping his professional career. During his four years of active duty and four years of inactive duty, Wurtz served as a Military Police Officer, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal (E3). His overseas service took him to posts in Okinawa, Korea, and Cuba.
A smooth transition to law enforcement
Wurtz sees a direct connection between his time in uniform and his long tenure in law enforcement. The core principles instilled by the Marines—readiness to be a leader, understanding and respecting a rank structure, and an unwavering willingness to serve—translated seamlessly into police work, he said.
His desire to protect his country naturally “spilled over” into his law enforcement interest: protecting communities at home.
A family tradition of service
The spirit of service continues through the Wurtz family. Lt. Wurtz’s son, Sean Wurtz, is currently upholding the family tradition, serving in the National Guard and deployed to the southern border. Sean is a wheeled vehicle mechanic and is currently up for promotion to Staff Sergeant (E6). He was recently recognized for his dedication and service with an Army Achievement Medal.
Reflecting on his time in the military, Lt. Wurtz acknowledges that the most significant challenge was a common one among service members: being away from home and his family members.
Despite the sacrifices, Lt. Wurtz remains a staunch advocate for military service.
“Military service isn’t for everyone, but for those who do it, it’s a lifelong impression,” said Wurtz.
Lt. Wurtz’s journey stands as a testament to dedication, serving both his nation across the globe and his community in Habersham County.
On behalf of all of us at Now Habersham and the community, we appreciate your service.
