Athens Police detain suspects after gunshot reported near courthouse

ATHENS — The Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) detained several suspects Wednesday morning following a report of a gunshot fired near the city’s courthouse.

The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. on October 8. A Clarke County deputy reported hearing a single gunshot in the area of East Washington and North Thomas streets. Deputies posted descriptions of two individuals, a male and a female, who ran from the scene. Officers noted the male may have been concealing a handgun under his sweatshirt.

Evidence recovered, no injuries reported

ACCPD Public Information Officer Katie Jenkins confirmed that shell casings were found at the scene, indicating a firearm had been discharged, according to the Red & Black. No injuries were reported.

Police deployed canines and used the Real Time Crime Center to track the suspects. According to Jenkins, officers determined the pair boarded a bus but got off before the police intercepted it. They were later located and taken into custody for further investigation.

The University of Georgia Police Department (UGAPD) issued a security update following the incident, urging students and residents to stay alert and be cautious of their surroundings.

This marks the second recent safety reminder from UGA Police. On October 5, the department issued a similar notice after an armed robbery was reported near campus.
