Grenade scare in Stephens County ends safely after GBI response

STEPHENS COUNTY, Ga. — A grenade scare in Stephens County ended with relief after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined a suspected grenade was not dangerous.

On September 30, deputies with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence near Rothell Road after someone reported finding a grenade on the property. Out of caution, the GBI’s Special Operations Unit and Bomb Disposal Unit were called to the scene to secure the device.

Authorities temporarily closed the roadway while they investigated, urging drivers to take alternate routes, including Rothell Road, White Pine Road, and Skyline Drive.

By 6 p.m., the GBI confirmed the device was a non-explosive novelty item.

Although the incident turned out to be harmless, the sheriff’s office emphasized that protocol requires every potential explosive device be treated seriously until proven otherwise.
