Georgia Milestones results show second year of math gains

Georgia students posted another year of strong gains in mathematics on the Georgia Milestones assessments in 2024-2025, marking the second consecutive year of improvement.

The increases follow the rollout of Georgia’s new K-12 Mathematics Standards during the 2023-2024 school year. State data shows that on six of the seven math assessments, the percentage of students scoring at the Proficient Learner level or above increased.

Students also improved in science and social studies. Three of four science assessments saw higher proficiency rates, while both social studies assessments either improved or held steady.

Reading improvements, mixed ELA results

The percentage of students reading at or above grade level increased in five of seven grade levels. English Language Arts (ELA) scores improved or stayed the same on two of seven assessments, with slight declines on the other five.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods praised the math results.

“Seeing such strong and consistent gains in mathematics, even following significant increases the year prior, speaks to the quality of our new, Georgia-grown math standards,” Woods said. “The results are clear, and I look forward to seeing similar gains in English language arts as we begin the new standards implementation process this school year.”

New push to strengthen literacy

State education officials are implementing several initiatives during the 2025-2026 school year to boost ELA and reading scores:

Teacher training and screening: All K-3 teachers began the school year trained in research-based structured literacy. Districts now have access to a free universal literacy screener through the Georgia Early Literacy & Dyslexia Act.

New ELA standards: Georgia’s new K-12 English Language Arts standards, based on the Science of Reading, are now in place statewide.

Expanding the state’s top screener: The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) is partnering with Amira Learning to expand professional learning for districts using the free screener. The program is funded by the state legislature and recommended by the Georgia Council on Literacy.

Literacy coaches in high-need schools: GaDOE will continue placing literacy coaches in the state’s highest-need elementary schools, an approach that produced up to 29-point reading gains in some grades last year. Coaching will be paired with tutoring and professional development for schools adopting the free screener.

“I want to commend Georgia’s teachers, school districts, and the GaDOE Teaching & Learning team,” Woods said. “These efforts will impact Georgia’s students for generations to come.”

About Georgia Milestones

Students take Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) tests in grades 3-8 and End of Course (EOC) tests in select high school courses. The assessments meet federal requirements to test math and ELA annually in grades 3-8 and once in high school, and science once per grade band.

Georgia Milestones measures student achievement in four levels: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner, and Distinguished Learner.
