16-year-old charged with Bay Avenue murder appears in court

Bay Avenue murder

A 16-year-old juvenile male appeared in Recorder’s court this afternoon facing multiple charges in connection to a fatal Uptown shooting Friday, September 5th.

A Columbus police detective testified 18-year-old Kalielah Davis happened to be leaning forward in the middle of the back seat of a 2025 Toyota Corolla when she was shot in the head as she sat with five others near 11th and Bay Avenue. The detective told Judge David Ranieri that surveillance video from surrounding businesses helped police identify a group of five individuals near the splash pad area where Davis was shot. Still images from that video show the individuals wearing distinct clothing and tennis shoes.

Investigators also identified the suspect vehicle with help from the real time crime center and were able to track it coming to the area of the shooting and also leaving Columbus. Four of the five individuals identified were cooperative with police, only one-the 16-year-old juvenile in custody declined to speak to law enforcement and requested a lawyer. The teen is charged with murder, five counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Prosecutor Wesley Lambertus said he was in court with the suspect just yesterday for unrelated charges of robbery and aggravated assault and the juvenile was a threat to the community. Judge Ranieri agreed with the assistant district attorney calling the teen “a significant threat to the safety of the community” and ordered the juvenile held without bond on all charges.

According to a Columbus police press release issued late this afternoon, the four others with the 16-year-old are also facing charges. 21-year-old Kacin Grant, 18-year-old Lamarcus Williams and two 15-year-old defendants are charged with murder, aggravated assault X5, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Grant is currently awaiting extradition from Alabama. The three other teens are scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.
